Ideal Diagnostic Criteria for Autoimmune Pancreatitis
Kim Myung-Hwan

Abstract
In 2002, Japan Pancreas Society (JPS) for the first time proposed the diagnostic criteria for autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP). The Japanese criteria are based on a minimum consensus of opinion in order to avoid misdiagnosing malignancy as much as possible. Therefore, the Japanese criteria for AIP may lack sensitivity to diagnose the wide spectrum of manifestations of AIP. There are three major criteria for AIP in the world; namely, Japanese, Korean, and that of USA. By weighing the strengths and weaknesses of currently used diagnostic criteria, integrated criteria that can identify the full spectrum of presentations of AIP are highly advocated. These efforts will refine the diagnosis of AIP and will lead to less inter-observer variation to provide a strong base for the research of this medically treatable condition.
